Choosing
The Right KY-Water Garden Installer |
|
If you’re
serious about having a water garden
at your home or business, the best thing
you can do if you want the highest quality
is to have your water garden professionally
installed. The trick is who do you trust.
The truth of the matter is everybody
and their brother is a water garden
installer these day’s from landscapers,
to the local guy down the street that
cuts grass. The company you want, is
a company that only specializes in building
water gardens.
Don’t go
to your local landscaper, or the local
kid down the street, and here is why.
If you had to have brain surgery you
would not go to a foot surgeon. Why?
simple. The foot surgeon cannot do brain
surgery to the quality and standards
that a brain surgeon can. We are not
brain surgeons, but the same holds true
for building water gardens.
In fact 40% of our work last year was
replacing good intentioned contractors
work. Good intentions do nothing for
you the customer if the quality and
experience is not there. If you want
the best for your hard earned dollar
you have come to the right place. Every
day at Aquatic Passions we turn the
ordinary landscape into the extrodinary.

What You
Need to Know About Certified Pond Installers |
|
It seems that in today’s fast paced
service industry quality workmanship
and great customer service seems to
have fallen to the wayside. Mostbusinesses
are now more powerfully driven by how
much production or money they can make
in a given season, often times losing
tract of why they got into business
to begin with. The obvious goal of any
business is to make money but not at
the expense of poor quality or unhappy
customers.
In the water garden industry this is
becoming more of a problem every year.
The more popular this industry becomes
the more landscapers, lawn care companies,
and new business try to cash in on this
ever growing industry. The problem is
most of these guys do not specialize
in just building ponds. A lot of them
are landscapers and they do just about
anything under the sun to make a buck,
unfortunately for this industry and
trusting homeowners this can be a problem.
What a lot of these guys do because
they want to make money in this industry
is seek out a way to become creditable.
After all most of them have very limited
experience building ponds and waterfalls
and if they have no credibility they
can’t sell ponds. Unfortunately for
the consumer contractors can now buy
creditability, instead of earning it
in the field through experience and
hard work. How you ask? Simple, there
are a lot of pond product manufacturers
out there that need to move the products
they sell in order to be profitable.
What better way to do this than contractors
that are easy to brain wash.
Now pay attention because this is economics
at it’s finest. What these manufactures
do is offer a pond certification program
to any contractor who is willing to
pay for it. The criteria to become certified
is very easy as long is the contractor
is willing to pay to sit and learn the
basics of pond construction, and learnhow
to install that manufactures products,
and attend seminars. The catch is to
remain certified you can only use that
manufactures products, even if they
are not the best in the industry. If
you get caught using someone else’s
product you loose your certification.
These manufactures also make sure these
contractors have all the marketing and
sales brochures they need to close sales
hence move more products. The problem
is when they come to a customer’s house
for a consultation the pictures and
video they show the customer are not
pictures of their work but pictures
of waterfalls and ponds put together
by their manufacturer. To the customers
surprise when the job is finished the
pond they have looks nothing like what
they saw in the pictures the contractor
showed them at the consultation.
Not only is this bad it gets better,
because most of these contractors do
not just build ponds for a living and
they probably have a brick paver patio
to install or something else to do the
following day. They really never take
the time to learn or be able to teach
their customer about the basics of pond
biology, so that customer has the knowledge
they need to keep their pond from turning
into a green mess. Hence hurting our
industry and eventually hurting that
contractor’s reputation.
|
Below
are some examples of what I am talking
about. |
 |
|
This is a large biofalls filter
installed by a local aquascapes
certified installer. As you can
see this does not look very natural
with all of the plastic and liner
showing. If you look closely you
can see a four inch ledge that runs
around the whole top inside edge
of the filter this ledge is designed
for rock to be set into place to
hide all of the plastic. You can
then bring your soil up to grade
around the filter hiding everything
from view. The contractors who installed
this were either to lazy to do this
right, or they were not paying much
attention during the certification
class.
|
|
Here
is another example of poor workmanship. |
 |
|
This is an Aquascapes skimmer installed
by a local certified landscaper.
A pond skimmer for everybody out
their reading this, houses your
pump keeping it hidden and protected
from clogging. A skimmer also acts
as a pre-filter to your main biological
filter, and skims debris from the
surface of your pond just like a
swimming pool skimmer. Notice how
high this unit sits out of the ground.
The two plumbing lines you see coming
out of the back of the unit are
the overflow line, and the pump
outlet line that feeds your filter.
Because this unit was set to high
the overflow system never had a
chance to work properly. Every time
it would rain the water would run
instead over the side of this customer’s
pond causing a whole bunch of erosion
issues, not to mention the fish
that would be flopping out in the
yard every time it would rain.
|
|
This
is what most contractors ponds look
like in Kentucky. |
 |
|
This is typical of the type of quality
we see installed by contractors
here in this state, and throughout
the country. To most homeowners
out there who don't know any better,
this waterfall probably looks nice
compared to the plastic tubs they
see at Home Depot. But to the experienced
professional, this is amateur hour
at best. This waterfall has no filtration
system like the biofall pictures
you saw above. Instead this contractor
decided to just dig a hole where
the filter would normally go line
it with liner, and fill the hole
in with gravel. Because of this,
the gravel plugged with fish waste
very quickly, causing water flow
issues and horrible water quality
for the poor fish living in the
pond.
The pump that ran this waterfall
was just sitting in the bottom of
the pond in a bucket, where it was
an eye sore to look at. Because
this pump was not protected in a
skimmer, it clogged about every
three days. Whats funny is the contractor
that installed this waterfall was
featured in better homes and gardens
magazine. It just goes to show you
most peaple have no clue whats good
and what is not good when it comes
to ponds.
|
As you can see being certified does
not make up for experience. At Aquatic
Passions we have earned our reputation
the hard way by experimenting with different
products and getting our hands dirty
learning what works best in the field.
After being in business 10 years and
building just over 300 ponds and water
gardens we have the experience and education
to give our customers the highest quality
and attention to detail they expect
and deserve. Let us put our experience
to work for you.
